The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Sports Ethics and Integrity (MAiSI) is a transdisciplinary programme comprising multidisciplinary knowledge and skills to identify ethical issues, engage in critical ethical thinking, and translate decisions into ethical actions - the core skills required to develop sports integrity. Semester 1 is taught at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, focusing on sport as a social practice in relation to athlete welfare, equality, inclusion and diversity, child protection and athlete safeguarding, along with the ethics of anti-doping policy, and regulatory approaches to sport integrity. Semester 2 is taught at Charles University, Prague, focusing on the understanding of values in and of sport, fair play and just classification systems and rules, and ethical sport as experienced under (un)fair conditions in both able-bodied and Paralympic sports. Year 1 is completed by an intensive social research methods training where students gain knowledge and competences as a basis for their Master Thesis at a Summer School organised by the University of the Peloponnese at the International Olympic Academy (IOA) in Greece. In Semester 3 students begin with a second intensive course on research methodologies and ethics that underpins the Master Thesis. Semester 3 is mainly focused on institutional issues of sport governance, studying the economic, legal and managerial aspects and instruments for sport integrity at Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz and Universitat Pompeu Fabra Barcelona (hosted on an alternating bi-annual basis). In Semester 4 students attend the second Summer School at the IOA, focusing on Olympic history, philosophy, and governance. They complete their studies with a public defense of their research thesis. MAiSI supports students to develop a sophisticated multidisciplinary ethical mind-set and a range of transferable skills that are indispensable for addressing the ethical and integrity issues of the sport world.
