The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Insects as Solutions for a Sustainable Future (ISSF) is a two-year, 120 ECTS programme jointly awarded by four leading European Higher Education Institutions: Université de Tours (UT) and Université d’Orléans (UORL) in France, KU Leuven (KUL) in Belgium and Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) in Portugal, supported by a network of over 60 associated partners in industry and academia from 34 countries. ISSF trains a new generation of experts in insect sciences, equipping them with versatile, cross-disciplinary skills to thrive in diverse global job markets. Insects play a pivotal role in environmental sustainability, agriculture, technology, and public health, offering innovative solutions to global challenges. Designed to attract top-tier international students from diverse academic and social backgrounds, the ISSF programme fosters an inclusive, equitable and collaborative environment. Its unique mobility path ensures cohort cohesion and comprehensive training across three key areas of insect sciences: Insects in eco- and agrosystems (Semester S1, UT and UORL), Insects in industry (S2, KUL) and Insects and health (S3, UNL). Students will develop strong theoretical and practical expertise in entomology and gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge infrastructures, including: The Insect Canopy Observatory for high-level biodiversity and ecosystem research; The Insect Pilot Plant for large-scale insect production and industry applications; and the In Vivo Arthropod Security Facility for groundbreaking research in medical entomology. In the final semester, students undertake a 6-month Master’s thesis internship in academia or industry. ISSF graduates receive a joint degree and diploma. By bridging science, innovation, and sustainability, the graduates will emerge as global leaders in insect sciences, ready to shape the future of biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, biotechnology, ecosystem resilience and public health.
