Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Around 70 full-cost scholarships a year for outstanding applicants from any country outside the UK to take a PhD, a full-time MLitt or a one-year postgraduate course in any subject at the University of Cambridge. MBAs, most professional degrees and undergraduate courses are excluded. The scholarship covers the University Composition Fee, a maintenance allowance (£23,152 for 12 months at the 2026-27 rate, for up to four years for PhD scholars), one economy airfare at the start and end of the course, and visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs, with further discretionary funding available. Selection looks at intellectual ability, reasons for the choice of course, commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership potential. Applications for 2027/28 opened on 11 September 2026. Applicants outside the US apply through the University's postgraduate application by their course's funding deadline, either 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027 (see the Course Directory). US citizens living in the US apply in an earlier round closing 14 October 2026.
