Global Markets, Local Creativities (GLOCAL) leverages the complementary expertise, resources and networks of a number of social science disciplines (Economic & Social History, Business, Entrepreneurship, History, Sustainability, Economics, International Relations) across eight universities to provide a deeply interdisciplinary and international learning experience. GLOCAL equips students with tools and critical skills to make sense of the history, theory, institutions and cultures of global and local capitalism. Students explore cities, regions and local innovation cultures of entrepreneurship that support sustainable global competitiveness. Rooted in multi-disciplinarity, the programme focuses on the intersecting complementarity of global and local forces in the economy. Central to our analysis is the understanding that globalisation happens in specific places that have been shaped by their own history, cultures and institutions: globalisation therefore takes many forms. Nine Study Tracks support diversity and choice within a coherent programme. Students spend three mobility periods with three of the degree-awarding universities: Glasgow, Barcelona, Uppsala, Göttingen, Erasmus Rotterdam, Kyoto, or Los Andes, Bogota. Year 1 students have two mobility periods followed by a summer school at Gdansk University of Technology; year 2 is spent with the third mobility partner, where they write their thesis. Graduation is with a joint, double or multiple degree depending on the chosen Study Track. Guest lecturers provide master classes within existing courses and make contributions to summer schools. Teaching is in English; additional language study is available throughout. GLOCAL is embedded in a wide network of non-University partners, who provide extensive placement opportunities: the symbiosis of academic analysis and practical engagement develops active and informed learners who can operate at strategic levels across a range of economic development activities.
