Programme Description The Hermann Niermann Scholarships are awarded by the non-profit Hermann Niermann Foundation in cooperation with the European Institute for German Language (EURIDIS). They are intended to support particularly highly qualified international students and researchers in German Studies and provide funding for academic study and research stays in the fields of German language, literature and culture. There are several funding lines: K – Short stay Short stays are intended to support the completion of an MA programme and work on an MA thesis. The research stay takes place in Germany, while the Master's thesis is submitted and the examination is taken in the home country. S – Study stay This funding is provided as part of an MA programme in German Studies and is intended to substantially improve participants’ German-language proficiency and analytical skills in the field of German Studies. The aim is to achieve a high level of language proficiency, particularly for prospective teachers of German or those planning to work in education. G – Postgraduate funding This funding line is aimed at graduates in German Studies who wish to further their qualifications through postgraduate study or specialisation. It also provides funding for an MA programme in German Studies for outstanding graduates of a BA programme. FP – Doctoral research project This funding line supports early-career researchers in the field of German Studies. Funding is available for doctoral projects that have already been started in the home country and are supplemented by a research stay in Germany, as well as for doctoral projects carried out entirely in Germany. F – Research project (for postdoctoral researchers) This funding line supports research conducted by researchers who hold a doctorate and have a permanent affiliation with a higher education institution in their home country. The aim is to enable them to carry out independent research projects in the field of German Studies. Target Group The scholarships are aimed at students, doctoral candidates, early-career researchers and researchers in the field of German Studies from the following countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine. Academic Requirements Depending on the purpose; usually at least a Bachelor's degree is required. Number of Scholarships on average about 30 scholarships per year Duration depending on the scholarship programme Scholarship Value The amount of the grant depends on the purpose. It ranges from 950 EUR per month for a short stay to 2,250 EUR per month for a research project.
