ISTA PhD Program (fully funded)

Fully funded PhD positions at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, near Vienna, for students with a bachelor's or master's degree in biology, chemistry, neuroscience, mathematics, computer science, physics, data science and scientific computing, astronomy, earth science or related fields. Students spend the first year finding a research group to join. ISTA takes applications once a year. The application needs a statement of purpose and reference letters, preferably from academics. The portal for the 2027 intake opens in late October 2026 and closes on 8 January 2027 at 3:00pm CET; referees must send their letters by 12 January 2027. Applicants hear about the first review by the beginning of March, shortlisted candidates are interviewed in March (mostly online), and the programme starts on 15 September 2027.
