Programme Description The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz awards 6 to 12-month fellowships for doctoral students in European history, the history of religion, and other historical disciplines. The IEG funds PhD projects in European history from early modern to contemporary history. Particular interest is given to projects • with a comparative or cross-border approach, • on Europe in its relation to the wider world, • on topics of intellectual and religious history, • with digital tools and methods, or • on environmental history. The IEG Fellowships provide a unique opportunity to pursue your individual PhD project while living and working for 6–12 months at the Institute in Mainz. During the fellowship you are required to reside at the Institute in Mainz. You actively participate in the IEG's research community, the weekly colloquia and scholarly activities. It is expected that you present your work at least once during your fellowship. The IEG preferably supports the writing up of dissertations; it will not provide funding for preliminary research, language courses or the revision of book manuscripts. The IEG encourages applications from women. Target Group The fellowship is open to PhD students from Germany and abroad (m/f/d) working in history, the history of religion, historical theology, or other historical disciplines. Academic Requirements PhD students must have been pursuing their doctorate for no more than 3 years at the time of taking up the fellowship, though exceptions may be made in exceptional circumstances. PhD theses continue to be supervised under the auspices of the fellows' home universities. Number of Scholarships 8-10 Duration 6-12 months Scholarship Value The IEG Fellowships provide a unique opportunity to pursue your individual PhD project while living and working for 6–12 months at the Institute in Mainz. The monthly stipend is 1,650 EUR. Additionally, you can apply for family or child allowance. Application Papers Please apply via the online application portal. Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly by the referees. You may write in either English or German; it is recommended that you use the language in which you are most proficient. Application Deadline The IEG offers fellowships for doctoral candidates twice a year. The application deadlines are 15 February for stays beginning in September and 15 August for stays beginning in March of the following year.
